From everyone here at Once Upon a Legacy we want to wish you all a very Happy Holiday!!
I know that this is a busy time of the year for a lot of people, but I wanted to post at least one more chapter before the New Year!! As always have a great day, or night depending on when you are reading this.
And I hope everyone has a very Happy Holidays!! And a safe New Year!!!
Stella was so nervous about her first date with Brandon that she couldn’t eat her breakfast. Instead she spent the morning deciding on what to wear. With the help of her aunts Stella decided on a floral dress and jean jacket. It was cute yet comfortable.
Brandon showed up on time dressed in jeans and a red sweater.
“You look beautiful.” he commented as he opened his car door for Stella. Brandon had pulled up the Stella’s home in a white sports car with black interior.
“I didn’t know you have a car.” Stella admired the brand new car smell and the leather interior as she fastened her seatbelt.
“Mother bought it for me a few days ago.” Brandon said. “Ivy is super jealous and wants one of her own, but Mother doesn’t trust her behind the wheel.”
“So, where to?” Stella asked. Her palms were sweaty, so she folded them on her lap.
“I was hoping that you might have a suggestion.” the car roared to life as Brandon started it up. “You know Twinbrook better than I do.”
Stella thought for a moment then decided on the prefect place. “Go down to the end of the street then make a left.” Stella directed.
The drive to their destination was a short one, but on the drive Stella and Brandon got to know each other a bit better. Brandon learned about Stella’s love of fashion. And Stella learned that Brandon loves comic books and Indie music too. Currently his favorite band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Stella also learned that he doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up. “I never really spent much time thinking about my future.” Brandon confessed. “To be honest, the present is scary enough.”
It was a short drive to their destination: Hollowlog Springs, a secluded corner of Twinbrook . Stella loves the outdoors, but this park in particular is special for her. Stella and May have been coming to this park since she was a toddler. They have had some pretty special talks under these willow trees. Stella has even jogged here with June once or twice. Hollowlong Springs Stella’s most favorite part of Twinbrook, and she wanted to share it with Brandon. Too bad Brandon didn’t enjoy it as much. He tried to hide his cowardliness from Stella, but he did not succeed.
Stella tried her hardest to get Brandon to enjoy the natural surroundings of the park.
“Look, a wild horse.” Stella pointed out. “They will sometimes let you pet them if you are gentle enough.”
She was able to get pretty close to the horses, with Brandon cowering closely behind her. But as soon as one of them bucked, Brandon got spooked and ran the other direction. After that he wouldn’t go near them.
The date didn’t get any better from there. Stella tried her best to show Brandon a good time, but he was not into it. She picked up a wild crow to show Brandon.
“It’s a crow, just like you.” Stella joked. “Get it? Your last name is Crowe. And this is a crow.”
Brandon only gave a meek smile in reply. Stella could feel Brandon shutting down. Stella suggested that they go some place else, but Brandon insisted that they stay.
It got dark quicker than expected, and once the sun set the temperature dropped. Stella lit a fire in one of the pits and took out some marshmallows for roasting. Since Stella didn’t eat any breakfast, and hardly touched her lunch, she was starving. Stella’s lady-like manners went right out the window as she stuffed her face with one marshmallow then another. She was making a sticky, yet delicious, mess.
“You have a little bit on your cheek” Brandon leaned over to brush away the marshmallow bits off of Stella’s cheek. Their eyes met, and Brandon finally smiled. When he smiled Stella noticed that his blue eyes sparkled by the fire.
“Do you remember last night you told my mom that you have never met your parents?” Brandon broke the silence that fell between them.
And just like that Stella’s cheeriness went right out the window. She didn’t like having to explain herself to Maleficent, and she didn’t want up do it all over again with Brandon. Stella is not a sad orphan. And she didn’t want to be someone’s charity case.
“Yes, I remember.” Stella didn’t try to hide her distain. She poked at the fire in frustration.
“I only meant that I know how you feel.” Brandon was taken back by the sudden mood change, so he felt compelled to explain himself. “I never knew my father either. Do you ever wonder about them?”
Stella kept her eyes fixated on the fire but responded with a nod and a “I think about them everyday”. Stella loved her aunts more than anything in the world. But she would be lying if she said that she never thought about her parents.
“I think about my dad all of the time too.” Brandon confessed. “Mother told Ivy and I that he left us when we were still babies. I might not know exactly what I want to be when I grow up, but I do know that I don’t want to be a coward like him.”
Curfew was approaching fast, so they decided to call it a night. The drive back seemed longer, because this time they rode in silence. Stella reflected on what Brandon had said by the fire. She thought about her situation compared up Brandon’s. She has a loving support group, while Brandon is clearly lacking that from Ivy and Maleficent. But he did bring up a valid point. She didn’t even know anything about them, although she always wondered. Where her parents cowards for giving her up?
So now that things have been starting to get back to normal I should be able to post these chapters more frequently. Thanks for all of your kind words and support. And as always have a great day, or night depending on when you are reading this.
Stella and Ivy ate lunch together every day that week. And then everyday for the week after that. Every once in a while Brandon would join them, but he would always use Ivy as a buffer between him and Stella. As hard as Ivy tried, Brandon would say little to nothing to Stella. Aside from the occasional, “that’s cool”, or “okay” Brandon hardly spoke at all.
“I thought that he liked me.” Stella nervously worried to herself. “He seemed to be having fun at the Red Rendezvous with me. And he looked happy to see me the first time in the cafeteria. I wonder what changed?”
Stella’s insecurities never stopped her from hanging out with Ivy though. They hung out together almost every weekend. It was still warm outside, so Stella and Ivy would spend most of their free time at the beach trying to achieve the prefect tan.
“Bridgeport doesn’t have a beach?” Stella asked.
“Not one that you would want to go swimming in.” Ivy replied. “Unless you like pollution and litter.”
Ivy also spent a lot of time over at Stella’s house. April, May, and June were always welcoming towards their guest. May was happy to set an extra plate for Ivy, and June taught them how to use her Sim Fu training post. Which, Ivy picked up really quickly.
“Why don’t you come over to my house after school?” Ivy had suggested one day. “I can show you my room, and my fashion magazine collection. And our butler can make you anything you want to eat for dinner.”
“You have a butler?” Stella asked.
“Of course,” Ivy had a mocking tone in her voice. “Harold will make you anything you tell him to. Wait, or is his name Henry? Harry?”
Ivy’s home was a mansion, almost a palace. More than twice the size of Stella’s quaint little cottage that she grew up in. It was, by far, the biggest house in Twinbrook. As if on queue, Ivy’s mother was in the hall to greet them as soon as they came through the door.
“It is very nice to meet you Mrs. Crowe.” Stella remembered the manners that May taught her. “Thank you so much for inviting me over for dinner.”
“Please, call me Maleficent.” she reached out her hand for Stella to shake. Maleficent’s hand was bony and ice cold, but Stella smiled and shook it anyway. “Norman will have dinner ready in a few hours.”
“Norman, so that’s his name.” Ivy laughed. “I was way off.”
Ivy’s room was bigger than Stella’s kitchen and dining room put together. She had a library of fashion magazines. Ivy might not be able to remember the basic elements on the Periodic Table, but each and every magazine was organized and cataloged. Stella had a blast going through them all.
“I guess polka dots are making a comeback this season.” Stella commented.
“Vintage is really big this year too.” Ivy added.
The girls laughed and joked as they listened to music. Then, like clockwork, the dinner bell rang after exactly two hours.
Norman prepared baked salmon with a zucchini salad on the side. The meal looked as if it had come from a 5 Star Restaurant. But Ivy looked unimpressed, and Maleficent was irritated at her son.
“Where are your manners?” she reprimanded Brandon, “we have a guest here tonight, and you keep us waiting.” Maleficent tore into him like he had kept them all waiting for hours, but the truth was that he came down the stairs not five minutes behind Ivy and Stella. Norman hadn’t even finished serving the food yet.
“So, Stella,” Maleficent made dinner conversation, “tell us a little bit about yourself. Ivy tells me that you want to be a doctor or something like that.”
“I was planning on attending Twinbrook Teaching Hospital after high school,” Stella explained. She wanted to elaborate but she felt as if her words were falling on deaf ears.
Stella glanced around the table and noticed that Maleficent was busy picking at the zucchini while Ivy was busy yelling at Norman about the spot on her fork. At least Brandon seemed interested. It was the most interested he had been since the night at the Red Rendezvous. He was hanging on her every word. Which made Stella excited and nervous at the same time.
“And what about your parents?” Maleficent asked, “What do they do?”
“I don’t know,” Stella meekly replied. “I live with my three aunts.”
Stella’s parents were the white elephant in the room. Everyone in Twinbrook knows that Stella has been raised by April, May, and June. They know all about it, and what’s more is that they know not ask too many questions about it.
Stella had a strange feeling she tried very hard to ignore. She felt apprehensive, and anxious. And she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was in some kind of danger. Although what type of danger, Stella was not sure about. Stella tried to convince herself that she was being silly. What kind of danger could she be in at the home of her best friend while sitting across the table from the most prefect boy in school? Still, it didn’t help that Maleficent was now focused on Stella like a hawk about to catch it’s prey.
After dinner Stella thanked her host for a delicious meal, thanked Ivy for inviting her over, and went outside to wait for the taxi to take her home. She hadn’t even made it down the front steps before Brandon called after her. Stella’s immense need to depart vanished at the sound of Brandon calling her name. He could recite the alphabet and it would sound like angels singing.
“I’m sorry my mom has to be so nosey,” he apologized. “As you can imagine, we don’t have company over very often.”
“It’s okay,” Stella tried to act like she was fine.
“So, I was…ummm…wondering if, ya know…” Brandon’s nerves were getting better of him, which made him even more charming. “you might like to go on a date with me tomorrow. If you want.”
Stella found his shyness adorable and irresistible. “I would love to.”
Brandon looked up from the floor and locked his sapphire blue eyes on Stella. “Cool, I’ll pick you up at 6.”
Meanwhile, back inside the Crowe household, Maleficent was making a very important phone call. A call she had been wanting to make for a very long time.
“Yes, it’s me.” she told the voice on the other end. “We found her.”
I know that it has been a while since I posted anything, and I don’t want anyone to think that I have given up. I won’t get into the details of my personal life. But just know that I will be posting a new chapter soon.
A while ago Mastress Alita nominated me for the Unique Bloggers Award. I am honored more than I can express into words. Mastress Alita has been a source of inspiration and encouragement from the moment that I started this blog. But I don’t feel right about accepting the award, due to my inactivity.
I want to close by saying thank you for all of your support and encouragement. And as always have a great day, or night depending on when you are reading this.
